Since 2014 when CryoCut® was first released, machinists and manufacturers have turned to CryoCut® to utilize liquid nitrogen for superior tool cooling, enhanced cutting performance & tool life in extreme machining applications. However, a major challenge in this process is the quality of commercial cryogenic liquid cylinders (dewar).

For most CryoCut® applications, a single customer will typically rely on liquid nitrogen supplied from a cylinder, such as those shown in the image above. The image includes 240L and 265L DOT vessels (which can be filled and moved) and 450L, 1,000L, 1,500L, and 2,000L ASME vessels (which are permanently installed).

The Problem with Standard Liquid Cylinders

If your facility lacks a high-capacity nitrogen supply, you’re likely using a 240L cylinder to run your cooling system. However, not all liquid cylinders are created equal—high-quality cylinders maintain superior vacuum insulation, secure valve integrity, and minimize off-gassing, while poor-quality ones degrade over time, leading to instability in liquid delivery. Many cylinders supplied by nitrogen providers endure rough handling—loaded onto trucks weekly, exposed to extreme temperatures, and reused repeatedly. Over time, this leads to internal wear, leaky valves, and compromised vacuum insulation, all of which affect liquid stability.

Liquid nitrogen exists at -321°F and is constantly trying to boil off into gas above this temperature. When a liquid cylinder is compromised, liquid nitrogen begins off-gassing before it even reaches the nozzle at your cutting tool. This premature phase change from liquid to gas causes turbulence and sputtering, making it nearly impossible to maintain a steady cooling stream.

In mid size to large applications, this isn’t a significant issue. However, for precision machining of small, intricate components with tight tolerances, these inconsistencies can lead to costly defects and process inefficiencies.

The same issue arises exists for manufacturers machining temperature-sensitive materials like polymers. Even small fluctuations in nitrogen delivery can cause millisecond swings of 50°F or more—a critical problem in tight process control environments where precision is paramount.

The Next Evolution in Cryogenic Cooling: CryoCut® Vista

As demand for the CryoCut® liquid nitrogen cooling system in precision machining and advanced polymer applications has grown significantly in recent years, the cylinder problem has often been a major roadblock in these applications.

With this in mind, Industrial Cryotech (ICT) set out to develop a solution to achieve two key objectives:

  1. Remove the liquid cylinder quality variable from the equation.
  2. Provide temperature precision for tight process controls.

This led us on a multi-year development journey to create a technology once thought impossible—eliminating liquid nitrogen off-gassing before it reaches the cutting tool.

The result? CryoCut® Vista—a groundbreaking solution with advanced proprietary technology, delivering reliable, turbulence-free cryogen delivery, regardless of cylinder quality.
